Stratton History from Coach Ross

Many people will ski at Stratton for decades without knowing the history and origins of the place. Vermont means Green Mountain in French and the mountains were named by French explorer Samuel De Champlain in 1609. They were named Green because they are mostly tree-covered, whereas a lot of New Hampshire mountains are not, hence the White Mountains. Stratton as a town began with ~70 residents in 1791, one family was named Styles (does anyone live in Styles Brook condos?). Skiing began in the area in the 1920s and 30s, with Stratton and Bromley both having early trails and both having some of the first rope tows in the area. In 1959, a group from NYC invested in Stratton to make it a destination not just for locals. Our run, Frank’s Fall Line is named forStratton’s first president, Frank Snyder. In the 1961/62 season, Stratton officially opened with 3 chairlifts and a 3 story base lodge. Today Stratton has 99 trails for skiing, 14 chairlifts, multiple lodges and hotels, and on a busy day the mountain will host almost 15,000 skiers and riders.

Summer Training Tip from Coach Ross

You already have a head start on next season! One of the most useful tools in a teacher’s arsenal is Teaching for Transfer. Teaching for Transfer is the realization that a lot of learning happens in the same way and from the same basic skills. If a student understands something in subject 1, then it can make it easier to understand a similar concept in subject 2. Understanding how to spin on skis might make you better at basketball or football. You can shoot a better shot in basketball after learning to flex your ankles on a pair of skis. The athletes you watch on TV playing football, hockey or basketball were mostly multi-sport athletes. Many NFL quarterbacks are also selected as MLB pitchers and then choose which sport to compete in. Play multiple sports. Learn a variety of things. Transfer what you know about skiing out to other sports, and other sports into skiing.

Summer survey reminder

We are conducting a survey of parents and staff in order to gather information about the things you value from your time with SWSC, as well as ways to potentially improve our community. The survey is 7 questions and should take about 5 minutes. Thanks for taking the time to respond!

Our next full club message will arrive on August 1 - hope to see you in person at the resort before then!
