SWSC Alpine: Shred Details and Matt Erickson Celebration

12 Mar by Jason Weinberger (Coach - Admin)

SWSC Alpine -

Our biggest event of the year is here and we're thrilled to see historic participation from SWSC. On behalf of the Carreiras, The Stratton Community Foundation, and the Stratton Winter Sports Club - thank you for your support of #Shred4Nate!

Below is detailed information about Shred this Saturday. A reminder that the entire program is devoted to the race on Saturday and there is no training for any group. All skiers who intend to be present should be registered for the race. It's not too late to register, but the process will be different as outlined below.

SWSC participants who have already registered on ASR will receive bibs from coaches once program starts at 8:30 and should not go to the base lodge on Saturday morning: After drop off at the flags, parents of pre-registered skiers should plan to pick up swag bags from the porch on the side of the MSS building just above our meeting spot. Swag for pre-registered athletes will also be available for pick up at awards in the base area after the event. Swag bags will be pre-labeled with athlete names.

All late registration will take place in the west wing of the main base lodge on Saturday morning starting at 8am: SWSC participants who register on Saturday need to do so right at 8am on Saturday or your skier will miss roll out with their group. Day-of registrations will receive bibs and swag in the main base lodge - please make sure a parent takes the swag bag and the athlete has the bib!

The race takes place at the bottom of Franks Fall Line. Viewing area is at the bottom of the trail below the finish shack. Please review my message regarding race conduct (posted a few weeks back) as it applies to this event.

The course will be a dual panel with an approximate radius of 17-18m. Head coaches will provide guidance on which skis to choose – younger skiers will likely use GS skis while older skiers may opt for SL skis or ‘cheater’ GS skis.

Athletes will be with coaches throughout the day’s two sessions, but lunch moves earlier and slightly shorter for most groups. Parents may pick up skiers at the bottom of the race trail at the following times or meet kids in the base area. Coaches will be back at the flags at the end of each group's appointed lunch time to bring athletes back to the course for run 2, so please ensure you are on time both before and after the break.

U10 - 10:45-11:30

Timing of the race is below. This event does not run in bib order, so the race announcer will call bibs and names as skiers start and as they arrive at the finish. In addition Shred, seasonal programs is hosting a special Big Ski and Sunbowl celebration for beloved seasonal program supervisor Matt Erickson, who passed away unexpectedly earlier this season. Coaches will take U8-U18 groups to join the Big Ski starting at 1:15 at the summit, and then return to the main base for Shred awards.

Shred Awards will take place in west alcove (aka Beirgarten) in the base area at 3pm. The awards ceremony will likely conclude around 3:45 for those who wish to join the Matt Erickson celebration at Sunbowl which goes until 5pm.

We are so grateful for the life-changing impact the Carreiras and Matt Erickson have had within our community, and this weekend we will celebrate them the best way we know how - on skis together at Stratton!
